There are several key points that will help you to make sure your dog knows that going potty outside is just about the most awesome thing he or she can do.

In this stage I also teach my students what NOT to do. There are several things that DRAMATICALLY decrease the odds of getting your dog house trained. (Hint: Potty Pads and Litter Boxes amongst other things are B-A-D.)

Discourage accidents in the house. There is a prevailing philosophy amongst many dog trainers that you can't correct a dog when they go to the bathroom in the house. This is a complete lie! My method drastically increases the speed at which dogs get house trained over the popular methods found in many of today's books.

You CAN correct your dog for accidents in the house. You just have to do it the right way and with the right timing. Doing it wrong can result in being inhumane and actually making the problem worse. Doing it the right way is very humane, fair, and speeds up the rate at which you can housebreak a dog.

Routine. There are three things that you want to put on a routine or a schedule with your dog. These three things will contribute greatly to your house training success. I have had some students do nothing else except for this step and were able to get their dogs housebroken.

A lot of people think that their dog will 'grow out' of a house training issue. Or, if they can just keep getting mad at the dog when they discover a 'present' on the floor that they will be able to get their dog house trained. Many others will swear that their dog 'knows he's not supposed to go in the house' yet he keeps doing it.

The bottom line is that it is highly unlikely your dog will grow out of a housebreaking problem.
