Dog Home Obedience Training - Training the 'Come Here'
Dog Home Obedience Training
Coming when called can be a lifesaving behavior for your dog. I worked with several clients who were going through training for the express purpose of avoiding the same fate that had befallen their previous dogs. A few of these previous dogs went chasing after a cat or a ball into the street. In the meantime the owner was calling for the dog to return but the dog kept going and met with tragic results
When you train this exercise, make sure that your dog is wearing a leash and a dog training collar. It is actually best to use a long line (a long leash of 15 feet or more made of cotton or polyester) as it allows for more distance
To train this exercise is simple. To perfect it, takes time. With your dog wearing the dog training collar and the long line take your dog out to the backyard, or the park, or any other area that has a bit of space to move about. Allow your dog to get some a small distance of 5 feet or more away from you. When he least expects it, begin pulling your dog toward yourself, as you move backwards, and as you are calling out come here. I know, that is several things to do at one time, but practice makes perfect. To review: pull on the leash, jog backwards, and call out the command. Got it? Ok, now that you got it I am going to add a bit more. As your dog begins jogging in your direction begin praising him loudly and enthusiastically, Good Boy! Atta Boy! When he gets to you praise him even more.

It is important to do all of these steps correctly and in order. The pulling on the leash helps him to know what it is you are asking of him, the jogging backwards kicks in his desire to chase, and the praise reinforces the behavior.
The best time to train this exercise is when your dog is least expecting it. So do it while you are on a walk, slowly sneaking away from your dogs side and then calling him to you while jogging backwards. Do it as you are going out to get the morning paper and he has no idea that he is going to be training. Do it as he goes to greet a family member returning home. The important thing is to do it often and do it correctly. Your neighbors may think you are strange as they see you always running backwards calling out encouragement to your dog. Who cares? You are going to have a well trained dog. When your dog will reliably come to you, move on to the next step.
The next step will be very much like the last step, with one exception. Allow your dog to get away from you and call out to him Come here! This time, however, dont use the tension on the leash, allow it to remain slack. As he comes to you move backwards a bit. You can now phase out the jogging backwards aspect. As he gets to you, praise him enthusiastically.
If your dog disobeys and doesnt come, instead of using tension on the leash, give a quick leash correction in your direction. When he begins to move in your direction pile on the praise.
If you practice this your dog will soon learn that coming when called is great fun, but he also must do it when commanded.
