Dog Sports
The history of the dog shows that he has often worked side by side with man. He has pulled mans sleds, guarded his flocks, retrieved his hunted animals, watched over his home and so on.
For the past several generations man has been able to harness the natural capabilities of the dog to train him to protect. Several countries have developed their own protection sports to judge the abilities of these dogs. These dog sports judge the canine competitors on a wide variety of activities such as on and off leash obedience, tracking a criminal using the nose, guarding a valuable object from potential theft, apprehending a fleeing criminal and a charging criminal, working through gun fire, water, and other distractions.
There are currently many sports where dogs and their owners compete. You may have heard of some. There is Schutzhund, French ring sport, Belgian ring sport, KNPV, Protection Sports Association, and several more.
Each one of these sports is judged by qualified individuals and ranks the contestants based on their scores. Championships are held by all of these sporting disciplines and the winners receive plenty of recognition and fame within their sport. The competitors are largely hobbyists who spend their free time training and visiting these competitions.
Whichever sport is chosen, each dog must receive a very high level of training to obtain even the most basic of titles.
