Dog Training FAQ

Dog Training FAQ

We have a 9 mon old cocker spaniel. He is very affectionate, loving, and willing to do anything to please. However , he has a bad habit on our evening or daytime walks of eating his or anyone elses poop!!He is fed well, given treats when deserved, so why does he insist on the extra "crap". He is also very active and while playing ball or frisby he attacks with mouth open hard on the fingers and arms. He is still in the chewing stage and we have bought him toys etc. to help combat this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Thanks for the question. Just because your dog eats a lot might not mean that he is well fed. If you are feeding a low grade food your dog may be eating stool in an attempt to get missing nutrients. Switch him to a premium food. If he is already eating a quality food then you need to teach him to stop eating stool. If you cant get him to stop that means that he doesn't understand what 'no' means. Read my article on how to teach your dog the 'no' command and apply that to when he eats stool and to when he mouths you. The 'NO' Command Good luck. Let me know how else I can be of help. Ty Brown
