Dog Training Jobs

I was once told by a very smart man that if you choose a career that you love that you will never work a day in your life. For a lot of people, dogs are their passion. Are you one of these people? Are you currently working with dogs? If not, lets get you started. Lets examine what some of these professions are.

Dog Trainer-

It has been my experience that the majority of dog trainers currently fall under two categories. The first category is the good trainers who are lousy business people. The second category is the lousy trainers who happen to be great at business and marketing. Both are able to survive and some do well by virtue of persistence, luck, hard work, and longevity. Fortunately, the market is wide open for well qualified trainers who know how to sell and market their services. Learn more about dog training jobs

Dog Groomer-

Over the last ten years the amount of money spent on American pets has more than doubled. This statistic is made even more interesting when you consider that the number of American pets has basically stayed the same. Americans are valuing their pets more and more and that is translating into more dollars for professions previously considered to be very niche. Dog groomers are able to take advantage of this increased spending.

Dog groomers often work on a commission basis. They are hired on by a grooming shop, boarding kennel, or vets office and are paid a percentage of what the company brings in on each grooming assignment. Typical commissions vary but are often between 30%-60% of each grooming job. This can translate into nice incomes for groomers. When you consider that many basic grooming jobs can cost around $50 or more and take an hour or so, the commissions can rack up quickly. If you are on a commission pay schedule and can do $400 worth of grooming per day at a 50% commission you can see where you can make healthy pay checks. Just as with hair stylist for people, if you are good, clients will give you plenty of repeat business. Happy customers are known to tip as well.

A recent addition to the grooming world is the mobile groomer. These guys have been increasingly on the scene in the last decade and are building a deeper niche into this industry. The advantage for the client is obvious, they dont have to leave the house. The groomer comes to them and can perform the same service just as if they had brought the dog to the grooming shop. Mobile groomers are often sole proprietorships. Because of a more specialized service these groomers can often charge a bit more for their services. This is especially applicable as gas prices have increased and mobile groomers must have a large vehicle to perform their services.

Most companies looking to hire groomers want to see a completion of a dog grooming school on your resume. There are numerous schools around the country giving great grooming instruction.

Kennel worker/owner-

Being a kennel worker can be a lot of fun. You get to see and play with a lot of different dogs every day. You form bonds with regular boarders. You get valuable and experience on dog behavior. It can also have drawbacks, though. Some people arent so fond of cleaning up after dogs and get headaches from all the barking. Even though there are drawbacks, most people that have a passion for dogs will easily overlook some of the less desirable aspects of the job.

As a kennel worker you are responsible for the entire well-being of all dogs in your care. That means feeding, watering, cleaning up after, administering medication, performing first aid as needed, and many other duties. It can be very rewarding to care for as many animals as you do as a kennel worker.

You can find employment as a kennel worker under two circumstances.

1. Check with your local vets office. Many larger practices will keep a decent sized kennel facility for their injured pets and many more will keep a larger kennel to accept dogs when their owners leave town.

2. In most communities you can find a few commercial kennels. Smaller kennels will have 10-25 runs and will often be maintained and run by the owners. Larger kennels with 50 kennel runs or more will often hire help in the day to day operations.

Being a kennel worker is not a job that is going to make you rich. Being that it is an entry level position you are going to get an entry level wage. Many are able to make a career of it by working for a larger facility and moving into management after receiving the necessary experience.

Being a kennel owner can offer all of the same benefits of being a kennel worker plus the benefits of potentially much greater profits. If you are able to maintain an attractive, competitively priced, clean facility that has a high occupancy rate you have the capability to bring home a lot of money. You can build a kennel from scratch but many real estate brokers specialize in selling kennel property. To buy a kennel ranges from $250,000 for a small kennel in a rural area to $3 million or more for a larger operation in a metro area.
