House Training Adult Dog

House Training Adult Dog
There is a famous refrain that you cant teach an old dog new tricks. Luckily, this happens to be false. While puppies are able to absorb new information quicker than an adult dog, that does not mean that an adult dog will not learn something quickly and without difficulty. House training an adult dog can sometimes be easier than house training a new puppy.

There are today numerous societies and organizations that deal with dog rescue, adult dog adoption, and finding homes for adult dogs. As a result, more and more homes today are welcoming the adult dog into their home. Often times these dogs come with little or no training. Dont let this deter you from house training your adult dog.

The first major advantage that an adult dog has over a puppy with housetraining is his fully developed muscles. A young puppy is still in development stages, so his muscles that control when he goes to the bathroom arent under his control yet. An adult dog, however, doesnt have that problem. He should be able to hold it for many hours at a time. Utilize his ability to hold it by using a crate. A crate is a den for your dog and a place where he doesnt want to go to the bathroom if used correctly. By using the crate you can teach him to hold it while indoors, until he has a chance to go outdoors.

If you adopt an older dog that has been an outside dog he is used to having free reign when it is time to relieve himself. Even so, he probably has a certain schedule that he has put himself on. He is probably used to eating at certain times and probably has a loose routine regarding when and where he has his potty breaks. A puppy, however, goes when he goes. It is up to the dog owner to put the puppy on a bathroom schedule. By adopting an adult dog and harnessing his ability to schedule himself, you can quickly housetrain your adult dog. The best way to accomplish this is by confining him to a crate when you arent able to supervise him and keeping him under constant supervision when you are home. This way you can see when he needs to go to the bathroom and immediately take him outside. By keeping him supervised, and taking him to the bathroom at certain times that concur with your schedule, you will take his old bathroom routine and make it fit your schedule.

The main key with housetraining your adult dog is supervision. It is imperative that from the moment your adult dog steps into his new home, your home, that he never goes to the bathroom. The only way to accomplish this is by constant supervision when you are around and crate confinement when you arent.

Stay consistent with these principles and you will quickly housetrain your adult dog.
