Paper Training Dog - Learn How!

1. Use repetition to show your dog where to go to the bathroom, in this case on papers or in a litter box.

2. Supervise your dog when you are in the house with him or her.

3. If you aren�t able to supervise, use a crate or confinement system initially to prevent your dog from �training� him/herself to go to the bathroom in the wrong spot.

There are, however, a few important differences when using a litter box or papers instead of teaching your dog to go to the bathroom outside.

First, decide if you are just going to use papers or if you are going to use a litter box. This basically comes down to personal preference. The advantage of a litter box is that you can contain the mess a bit better. Line your litter box with either paper or cat litter. Whether you are using a litter box or just papers make sure that the place you put them is both accessible to your dog at all times but also out of the way for your sake.

Second, keep the area clean. Dogs do not want to use an area that is constantly covered by their own waste. So clean the area as often as it is used to make it a more appealing place for both dog and owner.

Third, in the beginning stages, leave a small piece of soiled newspaper or a little bit of soiled cat litter in the bathroom area. I know, I said to always keep it clean, that still goes. While you want to keep it clean you also want to leave a small amount of scent in the area. Dogs, being creatures of habit, will soon want to use the same area to relieve themselves. Leave a �scent anchor� such that your dog gets accustomed to using that same spot.

When using papers or a litter box remember that repetition and cleanliness are key.
