I got a question on the forum that I wanted to answer. It says, “How do I train a Dalmatian that is almost already fourteen months old. I rescued her from the road and found out she was abused by her previous owners. She’s very happy and hyper but we need her to listen to us and we need to find out how to get her to respond when called or be housebroken.”

So, the answer here, a lot of people think there is a huge difference between training an adult dog that is a rescue and training another dog. Is there is a difference? You know, every dog is different and every dog learns differently, but at the end of the day all dog’s about is it’s about helping your dog understand the things you like and the things you don’t like.

So, what I’d start out doing is keep the Dalmatian on leash 24/7. Any time the dog is at home and you’re at home, the dog is on a leash and if you’re not home then make sure you’re doing crate training and not allowing the dog to be loose in the house while you’re gone. But by keeping your dog on a leash you can start teaching things like how to come, how to stay, how to walk properly on leash, your dog is not sneaking away and so you can start working on things like house training and things like that.

And so, a whole bunch of reasons why you’re going to want to keep your dog on a leash. Now more information on what you’re looking to do, that will be my recommendation. Obviously, use the resources on the web site. Then just start training your dog to do obedient things and get rid of things that you don’t like. So, best of luck to you.
