Perfect Dog House Manners
What is the correct thing to do when you catch your dog in the act of doing something wrong? The first thing to understand is that you MUST catch your dog in the act of misbehavior if you hope to correct the behavior. It does no good to rub your dogs nose in his mistake several hours later or to yell at your dog when you discover later that he has chewed up your shoes.
When you are house training, crate training, and getting your dog accustomed to the house and the rules of the house, supervision is king. If your dog goes to chew, go to the bathroom, get on the sofa, or whatever else you dont want you must catch him in the act. It does no good to catch him even ten seconds after he has done his misdeed.
The best way to supervise your dog when he is new to your home is to keep him on leash at all times. Let him drag it around or carry it yourself. This way, when you catch him doing something wrong you have quick access to grab the leash and give it a strong jerk while telling him No. If you dont have a leash on him and you catch him in the middle of something, what is your recourse? You can yell at him. Not a good thing. You can try to chase him down. He may be faster than you, though. But if he is wearing a leash you have control.
Have him wear a leash until he has perfect house behaviors, then have him wear it a few weeks longer. It can be a hassle and annoying, but youll thank me for it.
